From the work carried out within this module and from looking at a number of different practitioners, it is clear that there is a significant relationship between fashion and architecture.  The two disciplines coincide in many ways, which will be investigated throughout the dissertation.

Negotiated Study #2 images

BAVC Proposal for Negotiated Study

AIM
Broad scope of project and how they relate to career goals or future aspirations
Combining fashion and location photography shot separately and creatively combined in postproduction. In other words, a fashion shoot will take place with a model in the studio. I will carry out another shoot photographing a series of locations. During the editing process, I will combine the two photo shoots I carried out by merging one image from each shoot together.

This interests me because from the research carried out and the images I have come across, it is clear that architecture and fashion have an immense impact on each other and I am curious to find out how great the connection is between fashion and architecture within photography.

Skills & Resources
Potential new skills and resources required/ identified/developed
For this project I will need a reasonable amount of Photoshop skills for postproduction. Knowing the correct way to use lighting in the studio will be another important skill. As well as this potential collaboration will take place with (some of) the following: models, make up artist, fashion stylist. Other skills I will need include the ability to find appropriate environments to photograph and possible permissions. Greater general camera techniques and compositions will also be an important skill to have when carrying out my shoots.
Research & References
Areas of research to be explored - include potential visual references/related practitioners
The research I will carry out will include finding out about my potential audience, knowing how to find appropriate locations for shooting. Also, the research carried out will enable me to find out advanced Photoshop skills.

Books I will look at include:
1.     ‘Photoshop CC’ (Galer and Andrews, 2013)
2.     Architectural Photography’ (McGrath 2011)
3.     ‘Location Lighting Handbook’(Zetti 2013)
4.     ‘Architectural Photography’ ( Schulz, 2009
5.      ‘Fashion Photography’101 (Jade, 2012)

By looking at all these books, I feel I will gain an understanding of how to photograph places of architectural beauty, and how to retouch and edit them successfully using Photoshop. As well as this, these books will provide me with the ability to carry out a successful fashion shoot, creating aesthetically pleasing images.

Not only will I look at books, but websites will also contribute as a major part of my research. I will look at the following websites to gain a greater understanding of photography as well as architecture:
1.     British Journal of Photography -  http://www.bjp-online.com
2.     Royal Institute of British Architects - https://www.architecture.com/Explore/Home.aspx

I feel that the work I plan to create will be appropriate for “Architectural Review” magazine as its articles covers the built environment, which could be a range of manmade structures.

Deliverables
Initially broad, this will develop and evolve with the project. Some indication of deliverables should be given.
My work will be presented by a selection of aesthetically pleasing images. There will be possible collaboration with a graphic designer, but I am happy to be dictated to by the projects development.
Time Management
An outline production plan should be indicated. Consider using a Gantt Chart to show your projected project management.

Vogue Exhibition

Being able to see the evolution of Vogue over the past 100 years was extremely motivating. Not only has the technology improved and expanded but the magazine itself has too. The development of techniques used by a variety of artists and photographers over the years was so interesting to see.

Shoot

Having noticed the immense architecture around Spitalfields market, I decided to go back with my camera, in and around the area of Shoreditch, London to photograph abstract buildings and structures.

Using Photoshop, the photos could be altered and enhanced to portray interesting and eye-catching compositions which are aesthetically pleasing.

Below are the most successful images from the shoot:

Evaluation of shoot:

I am extremely happy with the results of this shoot. I have created a range of images which show abstract structures through different perspectives. Shape, form, pattern and rhythm are all key elements which stand out in this series. Framing was taken into account when shooting, to ensure the viewer feels drawn into the composition. Line is also an important element throughout.

Practitioners to think about when shooting

Terence Donovan
Man About Town

Fashion Photographer

The framing of these images is something that stood out to me.
From the image on the right it is obvious that scale and proportion are key elements taken into account when shooting.

Lachlan Bailey

British Vogue
Fashion and portrait photographer

From both these photographers I was able to gain some inspiration.
The way in which they placed their subject was extremely important to the overall composition. A lot of time must have been taken into account to get the framing perfect. Elements of line are all relevant within these images and draw the viewer in to the image to connect with the model.

Taking note of whats around me

While out in London visiting Spitalfields market, I captured some interesting architecture which happened to catch my eye. Even though the photos are quick snaps and are not of a great quality, I felt the need to document the beautiful structures.

Research

Careth Pugh and Hussein Chalayan are two examples of fashion designers that use architecture in their designs. Chalayan states he has more in common with architects than he does with fashion designers that could cause quite a controversy seeing as he is a fashion designer himself.

Carteth Pugh:

These photos caught my eye as they show the model coming to life. Architectural elements have played a huge role in these garments and I feel this is very relevant to my current project. Layers have also been used to add structure

Hussein Chalayan:

Iris Van Herpen:

“When I design, the draping process most of the time happens to me unconsciously. I see lucid dreams as a microscope with which I can look into my unconsciousness. In this collection, I have tried to bring my state of ‘reality’ and my state of dreaming, together,” notes the designer.

His collections are bought to life by the way in which he has designed them. The structural element to the designs are what caught my eye when doing my research. Great amount of texture can be seen within the garments and a wide range of tone has been created within them.

Negotiated Study # 1 images

BAVC Proposal for Negotiated Study

AIM
Broad scope of project and how they relate to career goals or future aspirations
To combine fashion with architecture through photography. I aim to do this by taking a series of photos that are fashion orientated using architectural settings/locations. For example; structural clothing or poses can be used within the shoot to emphasise this.
This project interests me as I am aware of the impact fashion and architecture have on each other, however I want to investigate this connection further.

Skills & Resources
Potential new skills and resources required/ identified/developed
Skills I will need include Photoshop for retouching. As well as this I will need skills such as location lighting, both daylight and flash. Other skills include working with models, potential collaboration with make up artists, stylists and designers.

Some resources I will use include criticality in creative choices; such as assessing the potential structures I plan to shoot and only choosing relevant locations. Other resources I will need to gain will be permission to photography the buildings.

Research & References
Areas of research to be explored - include potential visual references/related practitioners
The research carried out will include finding out about potential audiences. I will look at several magazines to find an area in which my photos could fit suitably. A potential suitable company for my work would be “Missguided” as their advertisements are often shot on location and the clothes used within my shoot would be appropriate to emphasise structure.

The books that will be used for research include:

I will look at ‘Shooting Models,’ (Falkow 2014) to gain a better understanding of how to capture a model successfully. As well as this I will also look at ‘Light A Model’ (Pegram 2014).

In order to photograph my model in the correct style, I plan to look at ‘Photographing Models; 1000 Poses’ (Siegel 2012). From reading this book, I will provide myself with a range of different poses to keep in mind when shooting. Another way I will do this is by watching ‘Location Lighting with Drew Gardner,’ not only will it provide me with a number of poses to use, it will also show me the correct style of lighting to use when shooting on location.

A beginner’s Guide to Architecture Design’ (Rogers) will enable me to understand architecture further as well as ‘A History of Architecture in 100 Buildings’ (Cruickshank, 2015).

Websites will also contribute as a major part of my research. I will look at the following websites to gain a greater understanding of photography as well as architecture:
1.     British Journal of Photography -  http://www.bjp-online.com
2.     Royal Institute of British Architects - https://www.architecture.com/Explore/Home.aspx

Deliverables
Initially broad, this will develop and evolve with the project. Some indication of deliverables should be given.
I aim to create a body of work, which will be either a magazine or a selection of beautifully presented prints. There will be possible collaboration with a graphic designer, but I am happy to be dictated by the projects development.
Time Management
An outline production plan should be indicated. Consider using a Gantt Chart to show your projected project management.

This series of images combines fashion with architecture through photography. I have done this by taking a series of photos that are fashion orientated using architectural settings/locations.

Evaluation of shoot:

I was happy with the overall outcome of these images. Daylight lighting was successfully used to capture these images, no flash was needed. Viewpoint and framing was carefully thought about while shooting and I think this can be seen in the results. A strong contrast in colour is provided within these images and can be seen between the background (structure) and the foreground (model). Some of the poses from the model are better than others. If I were to reshoot this, I would have the model pose slightly differently to show some structural elements.
